He was always right in the middle of the action-whether that was lying down in the kitchen as five people worked their way around him trying to cook a meal, or blocking the doorway of my bathroom every morning to await his breakfast. The absence of Grendel’s presence is so pronounced in my house. Grendel outlived them and had the experience of getting love from several new kittens in the house who adored the big guy. He would sit and take it, even though he could have eaten her in two gulps. When I brought him home as a puppy, my one cat tolerated him and the other went out of her way to smack him in the nose at every opportunity. My Grendel may have been very hairy and big for a dog, but he was the most gentle, kind, loving creature you could hope to love.
